Happiness is not a destination or a random occurrence, it’s a deliberate practice, a skill that can be learned, developed, and mastered. The happy mindset is about creating a sustainable approach to joy that goes beyond temporary pleasure and into deep, meaningful contentment.
“Happiness is not by chance, but by choice.”
The Science of Happiness
Modern psychology and neuroscience reveal that happiness is not simply an emotion, but a complex state influenced by:
- Biological factors
- Psychological processes
- Personal choices
- Social connections
- Intentional practices

- Respond instead of react

Happiness Exercises
Meditation can help improve your level of happiness by addressing some of the underlying causes of unhappiness. For example, you may feel stressed out from work and find yourself becoming more emotional. Meditation can help reduce your levels of stress by slowing down and focussing on the present thus improving your emotional balance.
Happiness also relate to perspectives – what makes you happy may not make someone else happy. Did you know that happiness is also a decision? For example most people choose to complain about the weather when it rains outside but it is their decision to respond this way. The fact that it is raining is actually neutral, but you choose to react positively or negatively. The next time something happens that you think is negative take a minute to pause and remind yourself that you have a choice about how you want to react.
The next happiness exercise is practicing being content with what you have. Have you ever noticed that those who are less well off with fewer possessions tend to be happier? The reason for this is because they are content with what they have. Remind yourself of all the things you’re truly grateful for – are these things tangible or intangible?
Living a life with purpose and meaning is an important aspect of happiness. Take a moment to think about what you would like to achieve in your life – do you want to help others or start a business or support a charity/community or maybe spend more time with your family? Whatever you choose make sure you align your goals to your values.
Another important part of happiness is continuous development. People who adopt a growth mindset, are on a journey of learning and overcoming obstacles. They build their resilience, learn from each failure and they understand that failure is not the end. When we adopt a fixed mindset we can feel frustrated that we are being left behind, we are not improving while the world and others move forward.
Healthy Lifestyle
A component of happiness is creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The mind and body perform best when you:
- Exercise regularly – The body is not designed to be stationary for too long therefore it’s important to take regular exercise breaks
- Balanced nutrition – Just as the body needs regular exercise, it also needs the right nutrients. A balanced diet ensures you’re getting the right foods your body needs
- Quality sleep – The mind and body need to rest in order to repair and regenerate. Try to make sure you’re getting enough sleep
Barriers to your Happiness
Managing Negative Emotions
- Acknowledge feelings without judgment
- Practice self-compassion
- Develop emotional processing skills
- Seek professional help if needed
Breaking Happiness Myths
- Happiness isn’t constant perfection
- Temporary sadness is normal
- Success doesn’t guarantee happiness
- Happiness is an internal state
Final Thoughts
Happiness is not something that happens to you and is more than a simple emotion. It is something that is intentional and requires regular practice and reflection. Your lifestyle is also an important part of achieving happiness as well as having a purpose in life.
